Lot description:

ASIA MINOR. Æ (26mm, 11.00 g). Countermark applied mid-late 2nd century AD. Uncertain Latin legend monogram in square incuse on a bronze of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar from an uncertain Asia Minor mint. Howgego –. Host Fair, c/m VF, green patina.

From the Richard Baker Collection.

The collector suggests an interpretation of X(FR) for Legio X Fretensis, but one would expect a countermark of that legion to appear on a Judaean-area bronze. The undertype is tantalizingly close to being readable, a clear reading of which would help further narrow down the source of the countermark.

Estimate: 100 USD
